How Much Can Your Life Change in 10 Years?

Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on how much your life can change in just a decade? If you had asked me 10 years ago where I thought I’d be today, my answer would have been wildly different from my current reality. As I celebrated my 40th birthday, I found myself reminiscing about my journey from a struggling 30-year-old to a fulfilled, confident woman. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way.

Embracing Change

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of embracing change. Ten years ago, my life was drastically different. I was grieving the loss of my father, stuck in an unhappy marriage, and struggling with severe back pain and depression. It was a dark time, but it set the stage for an incredible transformation.

In 2017, I took a major step by undergoing gastric sleeve surgery, which helped me lose 140 pounds. This physical change sparked a wave of confidence and a new outlook on life. Embracing change, even when it’s scary or uncertain, can lead to profound personal growth.

The Power of Self-Acceptance

Another crucial lesson from my journey is the power of self-acceptance. For many years, I struggled with self-worth, largely due to societal pressures and past traumas. Reading "Radical Acceptance" by Tara Brach was a turning point for me. This book helped me understand that true acceptance comes from within and that it's okay to seek help and embrace who you truly are.

Through therapy, I was diagnosed with ADHD, panic disorder, and borderline personality disorder. These diagnoses were not labels to be feared but tools to better understand and manage my mental health. Self-acceptance has allowed me to love myself fully, despite my flaws, and has given me the strength to help others do the same.

Overcoming Adversity

Life is full of challenges, and the past decade has certainly brought its fair share. From losing loved ones to navigating the end of my marriage, I’ve faced numerous adversities. However, each challenge has built resilience and shaped me into the person I am today.

One of the most empowering aspects of my journey has been realizing that I have the strength to overcome obstacles. This mindset shift was supported by well-known concepts from books like "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk, which highlights the importance of understanding trauma and its impact on our lives. Overcoming adversity is not about avoiding challenges but about learning to rise above them.

Looking Forward

As I look back on the past decade, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s to come. Turning 40 is not just a milestone; it’s a testament to the incredible journey of growth and transformation I’ve experienced. If 30-year-old me could see where I am now, she’d be proud and amazed.

I encourage you to reflect on your own journey and recognize the potential for change in your life. Embrace the lessons you’ve learned, seek self-acceptance, and face adversity with resilience. Remember, the next decade holds endless possibilities.

If you’re ready to take the next step in your journey, consider how you can embrace change, practice self-acceptance, and build resilience. Your future self will thank you.

Thank you for joining me on this reflection of my journey. If you’re inspired by my story, please leave a comment or share your thoughts. Let’s continue to support and uplift each other on this path of growth and transformation.
